On the surface, the song is about one person lifting another from afar, but there’s a haunting ache of impossibility, the desperation in knowing that words, even when distilled — “I want you around / don’t let the darkness get you down” — simply aren’t enough to lift the darkness, though it’s all we have to give. Which is why I felt the song points one towards community — the “thousand golden rays” that are and will be there, soon enough —rather than being one person sending (or being) one’s sun.
