I live about 30 minutes from there...last year we could not decide where to go for our anniversary, so we just booked an AirBnb there and wandered the town for a couple days ;) So I kinda relate to this story. But you should definitely do the keys drive sometime. Maybe not camping in summer, but it's a lot of fun.
