I’ve just written a 2500 word auto fiction short story called Harvest Time, which is episode #3 of The Chronicles of a Farmhand series. Y’all will get it tomorrow, but I thought I’d use this opportunity to share a real life farmhand story with my biggest fans. This event happened the second year I was on the peanut picking crew.🤠
We were about halfway through the harvest season. The picking had been good of late, I was gaining confidence in myself and the brand new Columbo combine I was running. I’d even gotten into 4th gear on the last farm — that’s picking at over 3mph! It might not sound like that’s very fast, but let me tell you — the game speed is at an NFL level, at 3mph in a peanut field.
Y’all I was really cruising at this point — I’d picked almost 30 acres on the day we moved. It was a Friday, we finished the last rows of the Huffer Farm at about 3pm. And by the time we all got dumped and on the road, it was closer to 4pm.
I’m sure you’ve all encountered tractors on the highway before — and let me assure you that it’s no fun for us either…
