PSA- Substack is Awesome
Newspaper Opinion Article- Ocilla Star
I thought I’d take a bit of a break from my normal essays and share an opinion article I submitted to the local newspaper. The PSA below was published in the Wednesday, April 2nd, issue of the Ocilla Star. Obviously, no one receiving this newsletter needs to be convinced of how great Substack is; but maybe, you write and haven’t taken the step yet to publish your own newsletter. Or maybe you secretly want to write, and aren’t sure if anyone will want to read. Hey, I think I may have even picked up a few new-subscribers locally too! If that’s something you’re into, a lot of Substackers seem to like the anonymity they posses here. Anyway, I’ve really enjoyed having a Substack account, so I thought I’d let others know about it too.
This might sound like an Ad, but it’s not. It’s a Public Service Announcement– Substack is Awesome! You’ll love it. I’m assuming you like to read of course, which I think is a good bet. Do you write? Have you always wanted to blog? Are you tired of seeing Ads while scrolling Social Media? Substack. Substack. Substack.
What exactly is Substack? Wikipedia defines Substack as, an American online platform that provides publishing, payment, analytics, and design infrastructure to support subscription newsletters. Basically, it allows writers to send digital newsletters directly to subscribers.
I write a bi-weekly newsletter on the site, but that’s not all. I read a ton of other articles too. Yes, there are paid subscriptions. But most writers seem to only paywall certain stories, or are like me and don’t paywall anything until it archives. So there’s always plenty to read, watch, and listen to at no cost. Plus if you do decide to become a paid subscriber, you know exactly where your money is going. Substack only takes a small percentage. And like I said before, there are NO ADS.
I love the Notes feature too! It’s set up just like any other social media platform, so you can scroll as much as you like. But unlike any other platform I’m aware of, when you’re scrolling on your “Following” tab, that is all you’ll see. Sometimes I’ll switch over to the “Home” tab, and let the algorithm suggest new creators, or show me content from writers I follow but might have missed. But there are loads of other tabs available too: Featured, Culture, Technology, Business, U.S. Politics, Finance, Food & Drink, Sports, Art & Illustration, World Politics, Health Politics, News, Fashion & Beauty, Music, Faith & Spirituality, Climate & Environment, Science, Ltureture, Fiction, Design, Health & Wellness, Travel, Parenting, Philosophy, Comics, Crypto, International, History, Humor, and Education. Whew, I actually didn’t realize there were so many categories!
So if you’re fed up with algorithms, and ads; or like me just don’t think you get any value from the endless scrolling on other social media sites, I suggest trying out Substack. It’s available as an app of course, but it’s also great on a desktop or laptop. I personally prefer to read the newsletters I’m subscribed to on my laptop, although I do listen to some on my phone at times. Visit the website or download the Substack app today to join the 35 million active members that have already discovered its secret.
PS– If you used to write or have always wanted to write, there are readers on Substack that want to read your work! “Leap, and the net will appear.”
Thanks for reading! I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. What does this platform mean to you?
The Southern Copywriter chat is also available to paid subscribers. For just 5$ per month you gain access to further discussion with me through the chat, plus full access to all archived articles and essays.

Great suggestions in here! Thank you, I use Notes a lot too.
